Trinidad native Laura Bonas Palmer is the owner of Akwaaba Gallery, located in Newark’s Fairmont neighborhood. Opened in 2019, the thriving gallery has become the art hub of the West Ward. Akwaaba is the city’s only Black-owned commercial gallery, and Palmer is one of very few Black women gallery owners in the United States.
