In 1864 Benjamin T. Montgomery created an angled boat propeller that improved navigation in shallow waters. Though he was never able to patent his invention (due to unjust laws which excluded enslaved and formerly enslaved people from US citizenship), his influence can be seen in the design of many modern boat propellers.
